Malfoy’s ferret scene
The huge holm oak inside New College’s medieval cloister courtyard appears in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Draco Malfoy confronts Harry beside the tree and tries to curse him, before Mad-Eye Moody intervenes and turns Draco into a white ferret.
Visitors should enter New College through the signed visitor entrance on New College Lane. The map coordinates point to the tree inside the cloisters, not to a street entrance.
New College is around a 20–25 minute walk from Oxford railway station and roughly five minutes from the Bodleian Library and Radcliffe Camera. City-centre buses stop within walking distance.
Once inside, follow the visitor route through the college to the cloisters beside the chapel. The holm oak dominates the centre of the courtyard and is difficult to miss.
Seeing the tree requires paid admission to New College. Visitor hours change between the summer and winter seasons, and the college can close at short notice for academic events, so check the official visitor and planned-closures pages before travelling.
New College does not provide visitor parking. Oxford’s Park & Ride services are usually the simplest option for drivers; city-centre parking is limited, expensive and affected by traffic restrictions.
The cloisters can be reached by a ramped route from Front Quad. The historic paving is worn and uneven in places, and there is a small step and steep ramp onto the grass. Accessible toilets are elsewhere on the main college site rather than in the cloisters.
The visitor team can provide a printed guide and directions on arrival. Central Oxford has extensive cafés, shops, toilets and transport facilities within a short walk.
